We are in need of replacing the current davits shown on this page with different davits or an "arch" that can accommodate
lifting and stowing a Caribe 9' dinghy or equivalent. Looking at rigid and semi-permanent davit arms, the swing
away davits, and an arch approach. Complicating, some, my selection is that I have a ladder and swim platform mounted
to the transom for which I want to Keep. The requires a little bit of work and reach to get the dinghy up and over the
protruding swim ladder.
Lots of pros and cons with all approaches, here is my summary of what to consider.
Semi-Permanent - Extruded Davit Arms:
Very sturdy davit system with extruded aluminum arms. Does NOT need to tie into a stern rail. My stern rails need
replacement and I am concerned about hooking up any davit system without improvement to the current stern rail stanchion.
Remove a few bolts from the Atkins Hoyle davit and it is easily removed. The davit system can me mounted on the upper
transom on the sloped area and not on the deck area, thereby not taking up valuable space on the deck area ( where I could
use a second cleat ! ) Price (High) Sturdiness(Excellent), Removeability(Excellent).

Swing Away Davits - Stern Rail Mount
These davits tie into a stern rail, however, I do not want my current stern rail used, as the boat
is a 1984 vessel, and I do not know the extent of the deck core being firm with no core rot, etc. The davits are very
convenient and they fold away, but I feel this trades off the sturdiness. The price is one of the lower price options available
to me at the moment, but I need to add in the cost of improving the stern rail

Arch Approach:
Still thinking this out. Still trying to understand the benefits of the arch over the cantilever davits.
Arch Pros: Gets the dingy up high on very sturdy supports, allows other stuff to be mounted on same
structure like dinghy outboard, wind generator, dinghy swiing out crane, etc.
Arch Cons: Very pricey and requires shipment in pieces and installation at delivery site. Not sure
how to retain current rails and stanchions without significant modification.

Click on the movie link below, and see a clip that my Dad and I made showing what we have now and what we hope
to have. It takes a few minutes to load depending upon your connection speed. It really tells the story and is worth looking
at.
